Virus Carrying TSMC Chip Fabs Offline

According to TSMC, somebody screwed up during a software installation for a new tool which allowed a virus to spread and forced the company to temporarily stop production and fix the problem. Chip production delays are expected and that may impact the iPhone.

TSMC is the world's largest dedicated and independent semiconductor manufacturer, which means that when something goes wrong at the company, a lot of products are potentially impacted. On August 3, TSMC's computer systems in Taiwan were infected with a virus that spread to multiple fabs.

Dealing with a virus means stopping production, figuring out what went wrong, removing the virus, and restarting production. It took TSMC until yesterday, August 5 to find a solution and at some point today a full recovery is expected. Even so, that's almost three days with a significant reduction in production.

TSMC explained that the virus was allowed to infect its system due to a "misoperation during the software installation process for a new tool." Once in the system, the virus used the company's computer network to spread and infect multiple fabs and tools.

We should expect shipment delays and additional costs to be incurred in order for the company to send out scheduled orders. But these delays, which are expected in the third quarter of 2018, will be recovered in the fourth quarter.

Details as to which fabs were worst hit and which products will suffer delays has not been released, but the company is contacting customers individually regarding delivery schedule changes. Apple will be concerned as it relies on TSMC for manufacturing its chips, meaning this infection could impact the next generation of iPhone and Apple's release schedule.

As Apple is TSMC's largest customer, it makes sense that iPhone chip production would be prioritized over other customers, but ultimately it comes down to contract and timescale. Apple will surely be applying the pressure if indeed iPhone chip production had to be slowed down or stopped completely for a few days.
